What is Gaslighting?

by John P. Reisman last modified Nov 24, 2020 05:29 PM
Gaslighting is a term that in the American vernacular equates to BS. With regard to politics in logic and false argumentation, it relates to rhetoric and propaganda. It is a form of Sophistry used to deceive/trick those who are more gullible and less informed. One problem with this is that we, that is normal people, have a tendency to think we are right when quite often, we imply do not have enough information.

What is gas lighting?

Remember the saying: ‘a lie repeated a thousand times becomes the truth’, which is of course not true. Gas lighting (or gaslighting) refers to a movie that exemplified how someone can systematically make people believe something that is simply not true. In the American vernacular, it is a form of BS.

It is commonly used by con-artists and the like (yup, that includes some politicians too) to fool people into thinking that their BS is actually real. It is not, but they keep repeating it over and over again relying on the gullibility of their audience to be fooled to get them to support the BS being promoted.

As mentioned above, humans have a tendency to think we are right, even when we are wrong. This has born out in multiple studies and well defined as The Dunning-Kruger Effect.

Note: This piece is excerpted from a previous Centrist News cast in order to focus on what ‘gaslighting’ is. The clip shows the edited movie from 1944 to give the viewer a good idea of where the term originates from:

The terms usage rose significantly when Donald Trump started his campaign to become president of the United States. As of January 19, 2020 Donald Trump has committed 16,241 lies, falsehoods and misleading claims in his public statements since taking office. That’s 14.8 lies, falsehoods, and misleading statements per day.

Of course that does not account for how many times he lies or misleads off mic.

Anther term for gaslighting is sophistry, which was covered in the Centrist News July 4, 2019 cast:

Definition of Sophistry:

  • sophistry |ˈsäfəstrē|
  • noun (pl. sophistries)
  • the use of fallacious arguments, especially with the intention of deceiving.
  • • a fallacious argument.
