The 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) seeks to adapt, reshape, and rebalance our military for the strategic challenges and opportunities we face in the years ahead. The QDR describes the tough choices being made in a period of fiscal austerity to maintain the worlds finest fighting forces. These include reducing force structure and expanding critical capabilities, modernizing the forces, and investing in readiness. Although the future force will be smaller, it will be ready and capable to project power over great distances.

Children Playing With Fire...

One might think that children should not play with fire, but they do. Sometimes they burn their finger, and once in a while they burn down a house. But normally they learn not to get too close to the flame, and fire can be dangerous. But the Republicans didn't just risk burning a finger. They risked the whole house. They did it intentionally, irresponsibly, and apparently without rational forethought of ramifications. Will they learn and not do this again?

John Boehner, the Republicans, and the Tea Party have succeeded in shutting down the government. Just think, they have succeeded in putting hundreds of thousands of people out of work in their effort to eliminate healthcare benefits for millions of Americans. That's quite a legacy.

An Attack on Free Speech, in California?

Word banning. Let's hope it does not become a trend. Banning words to control the message steps beyond the protections from 'hate speech', threats, and ad hominem attacks (to the person). It lies in a category that is obtuse enough that those committing such a mistake would likely miss the fault.
